As part of the “No Fear” tour w/ Killswitch Engage, Dragonforce & He is Legend
Mar. 28/07 PNE Forum, Vancouver, BC
Spring has arrived and that heralds the beginning of the “tours de jour”. First up to bat – the No Fear tour, swinging into action as Vancouver metal mongers were treated to the first Canadian date of the outing, featuring (the now mainstream) Killswitch Engage, UK powerhouse Dragonforce and the band most came to witness the mighty Chimaira.
Unfortunately, this reviewer’s coverage had been cut short by a major league Doc Martin to the back of the head. Maybe I deserved it.. I mean, I take a shi**y picture to begin with. Not to mention I can’t decipher what song is what –standing in front of a mountain-sized stack of amps in front of the security barricade. The world of live metal can be vicious and cruel – which is a good thing if you’re a ****ing sadist. who enjoy's a good thrashing while doing a night on the town.
Show openers He is Legend had canceled, show times were bumped and I had to go to the bathroom. Too embarrassed to ask Matt DeVries (the gadabout guitarist from Cleveland crunch gods Chimaira).as I interviewed him earlier on their bus. Ask yourself: Do I dare try to unload on a touring bands bus/home? Do I hand out gas masks upon entry? What would you do?
On a lighter note the band was incredibly tight live, playing every lick note for note from tracks played from their latest and first for Ferret Music- “Resurrection” including the title track, "The Flame" and "Pleasure in Pain".
In the end, the “First 3 songs-no flash" policy was in full effect, which means rushing to get as many good shots as possible - in under 12 minutes. Problem is the bumbling security (who had enough sense to wear ear protection) had no regard for myself or the other journalists I shared the front line with. Pulling kids from the sea of floating die-hards I was served with a proper Scottish soccer hooligan's boot to lower back of my head. This was enough to send myself and my camera flying into the stage. This not the first time I have been injured on the job, nor will it be the last. Although I missed the rest of the show, there’s something about the big bump on my head this morning that makes it all worthwhile.
